"Who is Dan O'Barr?"

Dear Neighbor,
To begin with, I’m a whole lot more than a “single issue candidate” and I am the only candidate for this office that is a life member of the NRA, has been an NRA and State certified firearms and “Hunter Safety” instructor, licensed Ham Radio operator, and has a web site. I am your best choice for the Mat-Su Assembly District Four. I'm sure some of you are still wondering--who is this guy?
Well, I have lived in Wasilla over 16 years and have been married for over 37 years to my high school sweetheart, Gretchen. Our children have attended Wasilla schools since 1986. I am an electrician, radio and computer technician, have had my own business and worked many years on the North Slope. I now work part-time in Eagle River, which will give me time to serve on the Assembly and do a good job for you.
I consider myself a “Constitutionalist”, and my political views on most issues are very conservative; I think government needs to be simple and efficient. I also believe people should take more responsibility for themselves. Government should only provide the services that individuals cannot do for their neighbors and protect the good people from the criminals.
I’ve earned the title of “Dan the Fix-it Man” in many situations my entire adult life. This includes businesses, clubs, service organizations, small groups, and personal relationships. I take the time to gather all the facts and find the best solution to the problem. I’ve used this skill to fix complex devices like computers all the way up to large industrial control systems.
Because of my love for people, I learned early in life that these same skills could be applied to mending relationships and working with people. My work experience has includes supervising, training, organizing, and working with others in many technical and service oriented fields. Not only have I been complimented for my ability to organize and direct crews, staff, and volunteers, but I’ve also been complimented on my negotiating skills and respect for others. This has been valuable when working with groups of people that have had a problem getting along with each other. This has included suppliers and vendors, programmers, architects, planners, engineers, regulators, labor, management, and volunteers.
Some of you might know me through my volunteer activities. Here are some of the many groups and organizations I have served in recent years:

Red Cross--Salvation Army--Valley Hospital
Alaska State Defense Forces (ASDF)
Boy Scouts--Girl Scouts--Church Groups
Lung Association Clean Air Bike Ride
Heart Association Heart Run
Mayor's Midnight Sun Marathon, Anchorage
Hope Cottages, Valley Walk and Roll for Hope
Matanuska Amateur Radio Association
Anchorage Amateur Radio Association
Amateur Radio Emergency Services
American Radio Relay League
Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race (In Charge of Communications for Restart 2001)
Wasilla and Chugiak High School Science Classes
Endicott Island Employee Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Committee

You can see, I'm a "do-er" and problem solver. I believe it's important to be a peacemaker and have respect for everyone. If you want more details about my positions on the numerous issues in our borough, look at the other links on this web site, or you can contact me by phone, 373-2569, or E-mail, dan@obarr.net. I enjoy a good honest discussion and I want to know your opinions. I would appreciate your vote on October 1st.

                                                                                     Thanks, Dan
